October 24th, 2007Thursday Thirteen #28
1. I never, ever, ever get heartburn. But, the last three nights in a row — I’ve had the most killer, hellacious, buckled-over heartburn.
2. I got a B (88/100) on my first English Composition essay. My grammar was correct, and my English instructor even said it was a great essay. But, he couldn’t tell me how to increase the grade to an A. It didn’t have ’spark’. He couldn’t explain to me how to achieve an A, he just knows spark when he sees it. He has twenty years experience, afterall. I fail to see how he’s teaching me composition. But I know teaching in action when I see it.
3. No matter how much OJ I use to chase my cherry-flavoured, Vicks 44 cough syrup — the vile taste just doesn’t go away. Vicks 44 is also not helping the heartburn.
4. Y’know how sometimes you just need a change? Going back to school is certainly a change, but that’s not quite what I mean. I can always get a hair cut, or buy new clothes, but that’s not really what I mean, either. I tried changing my blog, but that didn’t do it. That’s the problem, I can’t define it.
5. I think I found a group of people that I hate more than cops — postal workers!
6. I really, really, really want to nick the neighbors cat. She’s teeny (like our youngest cat, Jazz), and is the sweetest cat.
7. I haven’t bought a new pair of shoes since August. I know, there are poor children in third-world nations who don’t even have shoes.
8. I’m going to withdraw from my photography class and take it next semester. I got behind in the required dark room work, and now I’m just lost. I hate having to admit that I don’t get something, or that I can’t just figure it out on my own, but that’s how it is. I can’t figure out how to process negatives or make prints on my own. There, I said it.
9. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are the greatest things ever, but they don’t quite take all of the edge off of anxiety.
10. It would be really nice to sit back, relax and read something I want to read.
12. The computer has been giving me fits, lately. Everyday there’s something new that slows it down. Eventually, I’m going to spend time on the computer just to run various anti- or PC Maintenance programs and never do what I need or want to do.
13. Just blah.

ellen b, yeah, I thought of that, but the heartburn started way before the OJ/cough syrup combo. Maybe it’s the OJ instead of the Vicks, though?

You’re RIGHT about 32. I’ve taught writing and had tons of my own papers graded (9 years of college).
The grading is about feelings and impressions, which vary from teacher to teacher (except where real errors occur).
That your teacher even tried to assign a numerical score 988) is absurd — if not a disingenous attempt to make the grading seem objective (unless he did it so he can average the grades at the end).
If he can’t tell you what’s missing (that would have made it an A), then it’s safe to regard your paper as A-quality.

Get a digital camera, PhotoShop Elements and a good printer. You’ll be able to do more than any darkroom can acomplish.

Feel better soon. I wouldn’t chase anything with OJ if I had heartburn, and I never have heartburn. Having said that I will wind up like you with a severe case of it.
My T13 # 53 is up.
It is the 13 Tidbits of Wisdom edition!

Interesting list. Comment on your number 5? Cops back in the 60’s had a saying “If you don’t like cops, next time you’re in trouble call a hippie.” You might not like us but we do serve a vital function.
Oh, and grades in school don’t ever make any sense.
I hope you feel better, soon, and find whatever it is you’re searching for, change wise. That’s a tough one.

Take care, and feel better soon!
I took a photography class in college - /loved/ it. Took a second class, but fell too far behind, had to withdraw. I’d love to take another - there’s a magic about the darkroom that no digital camera can match!
Also? I need to take Omega-3’s, but I’ve never found ones with small enough capsules that I can survive. *lol*
Happy TT!

I agree that cough syrup is vile no matter how hard they try to hide it.
That kitty sounds adorable.

Feel better soon! (If you want a cough syrup that goes down really easy without any medicinal taste and that works really well, try Delsym.) Congrats on being a TT featured blog!

I get heartburn spells sometimes. Every day for a week I’ll wake up with it and it will last most of the morning. I’ve found that taking coral calcium helps a LOT. I doubt very much it performs all the miracles they say it does on the infomercials, but it helps the heartburn
