May 30th, 2007Thursday Thirteen # 24
1. How to speak Irish. I’ve been using some online instruction guides, have tons of books and audio cd programs, and I read a lot of blogs written in Irish. It just isn’t that easy. Not in the least!
2. Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. I can usually figure things out pretty quickly, and I can do things with a tutorial, but then I forget what I’ve just done.
3. How to Rock Climb. It’s a good thing heights don’t scare me.
4. How to sew. I don’t have any urge to get into quilting or all those country crafts. I just want to be able to make home decor that I like, rather than hoping I can find something pre-made. Like curtains. I hate the curtains available in the stores. And decorative pillows. And Dog beds. I could go on and on…
5. I’d like to learn how to hook up this TV Tuner thing that my computer came with. On this one I actually have to put forth the effort to read up on it. I just haven’t done it yet.
6. How to be a smoke jumper. This one is never going to happen, but I’d love to be a smoke jumper.
7. How to play the guitar. Dan has tried to teach me, but I just can’t wrap my brain around it.
8. How to speed read. I don’t really feel the urge to learn this, but it would sure be nice to get through the gazillion books in my to-be-read pile.
9. Photography. I would like to take a few photography classes this fall when I go back to school, but they fill up very quickly, so I will probably have to wait until next spring, or the following year.
10. How to make paper. I really enjoy paper crafts, and the only thing I could add to that is to make paper myself. I was also always fond of sculpture, and have a few paper sculpture projects in mind.
11. After I’m done making paper, I’d like to learn how to make books. I think I could make some neat journals of handmade, scented paper. Maybe with embroidered covers.
12. Candle making. I read a lot of forums and websites about making candles. I peruse the candle section of a local hobby store and online shops. I just need to slowly gather supplies.
13. How to be more focused. I have some attention span issues. Meaning that I don’t have one. I could learn any of these things if I could just sit down and follow through.
So, there you have it. Any suggestions or resources that you think might help me accomplish these? Have you done any of these yourself?
The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! My 12th grade English teacher gave us all a short speed-reading course, but the thing is, you don’t use it for pleasure reading. It’s really only to absorb dull material quickly, like in textbooks.
Happy TT!

Dewey, yeah, that’s what I figured. However, since I’ll be returning to school this fall, it might be worth it to take a little speed reading course. Thanks for the hint!

The only one I’ve done is a little rock climbing, but only on indoor walls. It’s really fun and not hard, well, if you have upper body strength, unlike me.
Paper and book making sound really interesting, though. I’d love to learn that, too.

I want to take a photography class.
Candlemaking is fun! And, so easy to learn. Then you can make soap. Which is lots of fun, too.
I can’t sew and cannot cut a straight line either.

I’m a smoker too but I guess I don’t know what a smoke jumper is.
My T13 is up too.

Smoke jumpers parachute out of airplanes to fight forest fires.

I was just about to ask about smoke jumping too. It sounds like a noble but fun pursuit. I’m learning photography and I tried to learn the guitar, but my brain couldn’t follow the frets…

Sewing is fun! I just made some curtains for the kitchen, they’re just a rectangle of fabric hemmed on all four sides and then a few tabs at the top so it hangs on the bar. I really suggest learning on a fairly newer machine. Really old machines will just make things so difficult. If you live somewhere where there is a sewing shop, sometimes they rent out use of their machines and give lessons!

I would love to learn how to rock climb too. I do know that a good way to start is a rock gym!

Speed reading….that’s for me. I have to read lots of technical mumbo jumbo things.

I’m sure you’ll have the opportunity to do all these things. I can imagine learning Irish is difficult, but you can do it.

We might be twins! I don’t speed read but I do read really fast. I tried guitar and was ok once I learned how to read tab…my fingers get really sore and I don’t like having short nails so I sort of quit. I’l take it up again sometime.

Out of your list, I think I would like to learn the photoshop the most. There are sites with tutorials, I just need to come up with the dough.
Can I just say that I love your template? I think I say that every time I comment here! Did you do it your self?

LittlePea, it seems we’re twin like about a lot of things, doesn’t it.
jenny mcb, thank you, if you say it everytime, I never get tired of hearing it. It was a template by Caz that I added to and modified. Thank you!

Re: #1 - I’m not sure, but last year we were in Ireland and a favorite and oft-used word was what we refer to as the “F” word!

Hmm, lets see…
1. I think you need to take a class, perhaps the tapes will help too. I found French easy (it’s probably easier than Irish), but I wouldn’t have been able to do it just from books and tapes I think.
2. Just keep at it, eventually you’ll figure out what does what and until then just keep your favourite tutorials bookmarked.
4. Do you have a sewing machine? I just got my Nan’s sewing machine and it makes it so much easier!
6. Hehe, I don’t know what that is!
7. I think the key is to get your fingers around it, brain is far too messy
8. Sure would be handy.
9. I love photography! Maybe you could do an online course if the in-person ones fill up too quickly?
Good luck with those things! Sound like fun.

Good luck with all of these things!
I’m slowly teaching myself more about photography and how to use photoshop, but I would love to take some classes in these subjects too, to help move the learning process along a bit faster.

Photoblogs.org will help you find some amazing Photography sites. Find some blogs that take the sort of photos you want to take and start asking questions.
Happy TT. Mine’s about my recent family trip to San Diego.

I nearly fell off the couch when I read “Smoke Jumper” - girl, are you out of your mind? LOL
Seriously, I wish you luck with every other item on your list. I have a guitar, too, but so far have only mastered 5 chords. Drop by, if you’re in the neighborhood!

Ummm, if you learn how to do #4 can you share your skill?
The joke is, I’ve lived in this house for almost 9 years and there are still no curtains. Can’t find what I want [and I'm pickie] and don’t know how to sew :-)
All of them are good ideas…well, smoke jumper I’m not so sure of other than all the cutie’s involved.

Speed reading isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! Learning Irish would be fun (though Spanish would be more practical where I live). I used to make paper and had great fun with it. You should try it. I enjoyed your list

Wow, those are a lot of things to learn! I would like to learn to make candles myself and I’ve done some readings, but I haven’t gotten around to doing it though. I’ve always wanted to learn to make teddy bears and around 2003 , I’ve done lots of reading and attended bear shows, and gathered the basic tools and materials, and by 2004, I’ve made some really cute critters that I’m so proud of! =) Nothing is too difficult if you set your mind to it.

. How to speak Irish. No foreign language is. Take a trip over there and emerse yourself. There are exchange classes for this at your local community colleges.
2. Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. Learn one at a time and find a small class so you get lots of one-on-one time.
3. How to Rock Climb. Just do it! You can even do this indoors.
4. How to sew. There are a lot of on-line instructions and classes, such as on HGTV and DYI websites.
5. I’d like to learn how to hook up this TV Tuner thing that my computer came with. Can’t help with this one.
6. How to be a smoke jumper. Nor this one, though my best friend is a fire fighter.
7. How to play the guitar. Local college should have private lessons.
8. How to speed read. This is an awesome skill. Go on line for a course.
9. Photography. There are some on-line classes if you know the basics.
10. How to make paper. I love this one and would love to do this but you need lots of room. Again look on line for instructions. (free)
11. After I’m done making paper, I’d like to learn how to make books. If you ever do this I’ll be your first customer.
12. Candle making. Go to Warehouse Plus website for good deals on candle and soap making supplies.
13. How to be more focused. It’s up to you. Make up your mind first and then every time you want to stray remember why you started it in the first place, make that your ‘center’ that brings you back to focus.
Have a great day - Lc
