Can you spot the three mountain goats in this photo? No? Try the next one.
Okay, so it’s still far off, but you should be able to see three white dots (it helps to click the photo for a larger view) — those are goats. Really, they’re there!

Before stopping at our friend Sonja’s home in Hungry Horse we took a drive up to Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir. I tried to capture the interesting sight. The reservoir is mostly frozen, except near the dam. On our bright and sunny day the mountains and trees were reflected in the non-frozen (but still freezing!) water, and if you looked at it the right way, it looked like the ice dropped off of a shear cliff. I thought it was neat anyway. (If you click it to enlarge, the effect is more pronounced.)
Alpha creek runs into the reservoir through a culvert. The creek is flowing slowly, but the snow melt will increase the water flow. Even if it doesn’t look like the snow is melting.
Some of these have been posted before, some of them have not. These were all taken in the Northfork in 2004. We used to go there every Sunday with friends to explore caves (some of which have cave paintings in them), and stomp around in freezing mountain streams. Schedules don’t permit for us to have those weekly outings anymore, but we do try to visit the Northfork when we can. And, y’know, it’s not 30° below.
