December 13th, 2007Can You Help Me Out?
Do you ever get so backlogged in your reading that you just don’t know where to start? My to-be-read pile hasn’t gotten so large that I’m just overwhelmed. Can you help me decide which one to read first? I’ve narrowed my list down to several books, they are:
1. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
2. The Secret of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman
3. The Polished Hoe by Austin Clarke
4. Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue
5. Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet
OR
6. The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman
So, which one?

I’ve got to go with Pullman - I just saw the movie and now want to understand it better.

I say The Secret of Houdini…
Just popped by to give some love. I was sifting through referring sites to our web site and blog- thanks for the link!

Consider for the future; “East of the Mountain,” by David Guterson. Great story.

jc, that’s right up my alley. I have a copy of Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars, it too is in my to-be-read pile. (I just ordered East of the Mountains on PaperBackSwap dot com.)
mojoey, I liked the movie, for entertainment’s sake, but felt there was just something missing. I wanted to read The Golden Compass before it came out, but, ah, didn’t get to it. Now I’m also wanting to understand it better.
FCL, why, hi there!

“The Golden Compass” is an awesome book. It’s MUCH better than the movie, which actually ended a scene early. It would certainly appeal to the same audience as Harry Potter.

Not much of a reader, my wife it. But I’d go with the Golden Compass.

I’d go for Golden Compass as well…and for the meantime, mind if I borrow those other books…lol

Don’t make ME choose! This is all too stressful. I had to choose a book for myself, yesterday.
The problem resolved itself through nature. I really, really, really had to go to the bathroom. I didn’t have a book in there, so I ran to my to read pile, grabbed a book, and raced to the bathroom. I’m now quite happy with my choice.

Houdini sounds like fun. But I have so many books in my to-be-read pile that maybe I’m not the one to be making recommendations.

I was going to say Houndini myself. I have a book I just started and got from the library off of Jeff’s card. He took it out for me. We do that all the time. LOL.. Its called The Lay of the Land. I dont remember who did a review on it a while back and it sounded good.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had time to comment, but I did want to say how much I love the look of your blog.

Since I’ve not read any of those, I can offer no suggestions. I’m generally reading three books at a time. That’s the only way I can keep up.

Can’t help you out since I haven’t read any of them, but I just felt like saying hi!
Let us know which one you choose and what you thought of it when you finish…

Hi Courtney, I’m just commenting to say hi to Brother K and to tell you all Happy Holidays! Kelly - wanted to let you know that Brian Stutzman’s mom passed away a couple of weeks ago. I wimped out of going to the services, so I didn’t get to see Brian.

Tough choices there but I’d say an emphatic Golden Compass!
